Grab your patience and a sense of humor before you head out to go grocery shopping. No list needed, and certainly don’t attempt to look at a recipe before you go! Supplies are very limited. But if you are flexible and creative and you have US dollars (which many Africans do not), you won’t go hungry. Many grocery stores that were once well stocked and flourishing are nearly empty. A couple of aisles may look full, but at a closer look you realize that there are only multiples of the same item.
Oil, flour and sugar were months ago impossible to come by. Now that just is about all that’s on the shelves. Mom was out of dish soap and had resorted to using shampoo for the dishes. |

She got a text message from a friend telling her that one of the grocery stores now had dish soap. We dashed right over to buy bottle of dish soap for nearly $8 US.
Another adventure took us to buy yogurt from a “store” that had recently opened in an office in the industrial part of town. We went on our mission to find this place known as Hudson’s. After being sent down an alley to find Bay 7, we came across a metal grated door. We stepped in, ventured down a couple of vacated and unlit hallways, and up a metal staircase. We were thrilled to find “the shop” at the top and were warmly greeted with a menu of items for purchase. We left with 5 containers of greek yogurt and big smiles! |
