On the Up Side

Life in Zimbabwe sounds miserable, and in theory, it should be. But the reality is, living in Zimbabwe can be fabulous! If you are fortunate enough to have a job and have access to US dollars, this is one of the most enjoyable lifestyles in the world. The weather is beautiful, with a very moderate climate. A hot summer's day might reach 90 degrees. Winter doesn’t get too cold, not enough to freeze even.
The bird life in Zimbabwe is phenomenal, and sitting on the lawn in a garden you can easily see 20-30 different species - and hear their songs.
Because there is so little to buy, life is simple. The rat race that so many people in the US live in doesn’t exist there. You learn to accept that the power will be out several days of the week, that the phones too can be out for days on end, and with that comes a certain peace and simplicity. There is lots of time for drinking tea in the garden and watching the birds, going for walks and talking with friends.
People all help each other and network and the sense of community is amazing. The local Zimbabweans are a friendly bunch, and you can always expect a smile, a wave, or a friendly chat.
